Hand-rung bell
 Descriptive
  17 x 8.2 x 8.2 cm ; 8.2 cm (diameter)
  Copper bell, wooden handle
The ringing of the bell announced the start and finish of lessons in village schools, which were more organised than old-style private schools in having separate classes and a fixed timetable. After the Second World War, the Government made lesson times uniform - between 30 and 40 minutes - in schools where students of the same standard were grouped in the same classrooms.
