In 1952, the Government first conducted the Hong Kong Chinese School Certificate Examination (HKCSCE) for students in Chinese secondary schools. In 1961, the Hong Kong School Certificate Examination was renamed the Hong Kong English School Certificate Examination (HKESCE) in order to distinguish these two exams clearly.
