Collection: The Cradle of New Chinese Ink Painting Movement
The Wah Yan College, Kowloon, made a donation of 97 paintings to the Hong Kong Museum of Education, with full support from Mr TAM Chi Sing (a former art teacher of Wah Yah College, Kowloon and the former Chief Curator of Hong Kong Museum of Art).
These paintings were originally from "The Cradle of New Chinese Ink Painting Movement" exhibition held at HKIEd at the end of 2010 jointly presented by HKIEd and Wah Yan College Kowloon. The exhibits are the class works of Form 1 and Form 2 students some 45 years ago. At that time art was a minor subject in the school curriculum. Only the junior grades in a secondary school had art in their class timetable. These paintings have become the rare historical material evidence that 20th century Hong Kong was the founding ground for the growth of a new spirit in education, especially in Chinese art education as it overturned the thousand-year-old tradition of learning Chinese painting through imitation.
